  • 3 lbs boneless beef shoulder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp molasses
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Five Spice Powder
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp honey (for basting)
  • Fresh cilantro leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cut the beef into long strips about 3 inches thick.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together sugar, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, hoisin sauce, molasses, salt, Five Spice Powder, white pepper, and sesame oil until smooth.
  3. Rub marinade generously on beef strips and refrigerate overnight.
  4. Preheat oven or grill to 500°F.
  5. Line a baking sheet with foil and place a rack on top. Spray with cooking spray.
  6. Shake off excess marinade from beef and arrange on rack.
  7. Roast uncovered for 25 minutes; turn the pieces and roast for another 10 minutes while basting with the reserved marinade mixed with honey.
  8. Baste again and roast for an additional final five minutes until caramelized.
  9. Let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.
