  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (to brown)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 12 Tbsp milk or cream (as needed for consistency)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • flaky sea salt or chopped toasted pecans (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, sea salt, and cinnamon.
  2. In a large bowl, cream softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in maple syrup.
  3. Beat in egg and vanilla until just combined.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until no flour streaks remain.
  5. Chill dough for at least 1 hour before baking.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Scoop dough onto lined baking sheets, spacing them apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden; centers should look set.
  8. Prepare brown butter icing by browning remaining butter and whisking it together with powdered sugar, maple syrup, and milk until smooth.
  9. Drizzle icing over cooled cookies and sprinkle with flaky sea salt or nuts if desired.
