Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples (diced)
  • 1/4 cup apple butter
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 2/3 cups bread flour
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • For the cream cheese frosting: 2 ounces cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: Cook diced apples, apple butter, sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat until softened.
  2. Make the dough: Mix warm milk, cream, egg, and vanilla in one bowl; combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in another. Gradually mix wet into dry ingredients until a sticky dough forms. Knead until smooth.
  3. Let it rise: Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled (60-90 minutes).
  4. Assemble the rolls: Roll out the dough into a rectangle; spread with butter and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Spoon apple filling on top and roll tightly before slicing.
  5. Bake: Place rolls in a greased dish and let rise briefly; bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Frost: Allow cooling slightly before drizzling with cream cheese frosting.
